Cornwall, St Just - Levant Mine

You can see a narrow ladder leading down this shaft. In 1919 the link between the engine and a rod broke, sending 31 miners to their death. It was extremely difficult after the accident to access the lower levels. It took 5 days to be able to account for everyone. The Man Engine was never used again.
